High On Blues – The High Street Sessions

Release info: December 2000, Rhythm Records, RR003
Recorded live at the High Street Theatre, Durbanville during 2000.
A compilation of South African blues artists that have played at the High Street Theatre in Bellville, Cape Town, since it opened about a year ago. Afrikaans blues is represented by Valiant Swart and Piet Botha… the music is true to the blues ethic and style, but the words are sung in Afrikaans… moving stuff. The Boulevard Blues Band play some blues classics including covers of Snowy White’s ‘Change My Life’ and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Empty Arms’. Delta Blue are brilliant and have 3 songs on this CD including their own composition ‘Boogie Chillen’ (not the John Lee Hooker song with a similar title). Frosted Orange (Albert Frost and Simon “Agent” Orange with Jacques Shutte on drums) play some jazzy blues driven by Simon’s keyboards. Highly recommended
— Brian Currin, December 2000
